Monica Merli is Managing Director – Global Head of Regional Management for Moody’s Investors Service (MIS). Monica has taken on this global role since August 2020, having been the Regional Head for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) since October 2016. In her role, Monica reports to the MIS President and is responsible for development and coordination of regional strategies and geographic initiatives, including adjustments to regulatory changes and expansion of footprint and activities. Monica oversees the implementation of a globally consistent governance model at the regional and local jurisdiction level and is executive board member for several MIS's regulated entities. Monica is also responsible for the management and expansion of a portfolio of investments in domestic credit rating agencies in emerging markets.
Monica has a deep knowledge of the MIS ratings business and strong leadership and management skills, having led the EMEA Infrastructure Finance analytical franchise prior to moving to Regional Management. As Regional Head EMEA, Monica steered MIS’s European operations through the complex Brexit adjustments, expanded the EMEA footprint, including the establishment of a new service hub in Lithuania, and formulated a series of local initiatives to facilitate execution of MIS global strategy in the EMEA region.
Until September 2016, Monica was Managing Director for MIS’s EMEA Infrastructure Finance team and was responsible for coordinating and overseeing the activities of a 50-person analytical team covering the ratings of electric, gas and water utilities, transportation infrastructure companies, other infrastructure entities and project financings in the region.
Before assuming this position in 2008, Monica acted as MIS’s lead analyst for a broad range of European infrastructure and utility companies and authored a number of rating methodologies for UK water and other infrastructure sectors. Monica acquired a deep understanding of different financing techniques and, as a respected infrastructure credit expert, was a frequent speaker at industry events.
Monica joined MIS in December 1998 from Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, where she worked as an analyst in the bank’s credit research and supervision division. Prior to her banking experience, she had more than five years of accounting and corporate finance experience with a leading UK Chartered Accountants group.
Monica holds an Economics and Business degree from the University of Florence, Italy, and is an alumna of the London Business School, where she completed the Corporate Finance Programme.
