Japan’s economy is caught between a dismal trade outlook and fragile domestic demand. Conflict in the Middle East has sent commodity prices surging, an uncomfortable echo of the inflation and supply shocks that followed the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. U.S. tariff policy remains in flux, with the threat of higher import levies far from gone. Trade threats and stiffer competition from China are added concerns. At home, the lack of real wage growth is the main drag. Slowing inflation and steady nominal pay gains were supposed to lift real incomes in 2026, but the prospect of a fresh jump in inflation pushes that scenario into the distance.
