UK water companies continue to face intense scrutiny. In May, Government said that a record 81 criminal investigations have been launched as part of its crackdown on sewage dumping. The driest spring in a century resulted in hosepipe bans and what has likely been the warmest summer on record has increased the focus on resources and resilience.
The Independent Water Commission - chaired by Sir Jon Cunliffe - was tasked with reviewing the “broken” sector and made 88 recommendations in its Final Report. Government quickly announced the abolition of Ofwat saying a new regulator will “end the tangle of ineffective regulation” and provide “clarity and direction”. The promised revolution comes as the sector faces unprecedented investment needs and it will not be easy to deliver for consumers, the environment and investors whilst “hardworking British families are never again hit by the shocking bill hikes we saw last year”.
Join Moody’s and key stakeholders to discuss the way forward for the UK water sector.
