The energy transition is in flux. European countries maintain ambitious decarbonisation targets but, within the trilemma and amidst critical uncertainties, the emphasis continues to shift. There is renewed focus on affordability and security of supply. Utilities continue to review their strategies and investment programs with some scaling back planned spending on renewables. A growing number of countries are exploring new nuclear as a source of low carbon baseload capacity but sizeable investment in gas plants appears likely with, for example, the German government planning 20GW of new capacity by 2030. Investment in electricity networks, a key enabler of the transition, continues to accelerate while regulators and operators consider how to maintain a strong investment proposition and mitigate the impact of growth capex on balance sheets.
